Experiencing Xel-Ha in One Day

Experiencing Xel-Ha in One Day

Deep in the heart of the Riviera Maya, nestled on the coastline just north of Tulum, a breathtaking paradise is awaiting you. A dazzling inlet and lagoon tucked away in the sea-side jungle, forming a natural aquarium teeming with tropical fish, flora and fauna.

This astonishing place was named Xel-Ha by the ancient Mayans, which translates to ‘where the water is born’.

Today, this natural wonder of a theme park invites you in to explore the multitude of aquatic activities on offer, feast on authentic Mexican food, and support their habitat conservation program and turtle reserve.

Xel-Ha is a great destination for a fun-filled trip out of Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, or Cancun, so read on to see how to spend your day here!

Getting There

Xel-Ha is easily accessible from anywhere in the state of Quintana Roo.

If you’re staying in Cancun, the journey takes around an hour and a half straight down the coast, so we recommend getting an early start heading out from your vacation rental to really make the most of your day!

If you’re driving a rental car, signposts for the park are clear along the highway and parking is free! Or if you’d prefer, you can take the bus or even a taxi from Cancun instead.

If you fancy visiting the coastal ruins at Tulum as well, they’re located just 9km from Xel-Ha, meaning you can head there to watch the sunset after a great day in the park!

Things to Do

There are countless activities and sights to enjoy at Xel-Ha to keep the whole family entertained!

Start your day at the Chula Vista Restaurant, where you can eat breakfast in the early morning sunshine with a splendid view over the shimmering water.

The adventures begin at the Xel-Ha cave for some peaceful reflection time. Soak up the magical energy of this covered Mayan cenote, admiring the dancing illuminations created by the natural light and the gentle waves.

Second, take in the gorgeous view from the top of the Scenic Lighthouse before soaring through the air on the Salpichanga zip-line course, ending with a splash in the cool blue waters!

You’ve worked up an appetite and now it’s time for lunch! Dig into some traditional Mexican cuisine with a regional lunch buffet at the rustic La Cocina del Pueblo Restaurant. The pork with achiote sauce is the top recommendation from this menu – enjoy!

After filling up on food, head to the most tranquil corner of the park, the Bay of Caprices, to absorb some sun rays and relax while your food goes down!

When you’re raring to go again, go snorkeling to explore Xel-Ha’s astonishing underwater kingdom. Here you’ll see angelfish, parrotfish and the queen conch, amongst many other fascinating species!

Finally, you’ll end your day at Xel-Ha with a soothing cruise down the river on an individual or double inner tube. Drift at a leisurely pace through the mangroves and past other activities such as the Cliff of Courage and the Trepachanga, where you can test your nerve! There are also plenty of platforms along the way to stop and rest or appreciate the scenery!

Now you’ve had an unforgettable day at Xel-Ha park, it’s time to head back to your vacation rental in Cancun!

We know you’ll have a great time here! Don’t forget to bring swimming suits, a towel, bio-degradable sunscreen, and a dry change of clothes with you – Xel-Ha has many convenient lockers located throughout the park to store your belongings and valuables!
