When most people think of Cancun they often think of pristine beaches, crystal blue water and amazing weather. All the above are true, but what you might not know is that there are great museums in Cancun, they might perfectly fit into your itinerary …

Museo Maya de Cancún

First up is the Mayan Museum of Cancun! This conveniently located museum has a charming exhibition that is a fantastic introduction to Mayan culture.

Inside the main building you’ll find a fascinating exhibit showcasing artifacts, from cooking bowls and utensils to statues and murals. The exploration of Mayan culture doesn’t stop within the museum walls, however.

There are historical ruins within the grounds that are a sight to be marveled, and the surrounding landscape is as interesting as the museum itself: the gardens are beautifully maintained, and the tropical plants and flowers make a true paradise.

If you’re looking for an all-encompassing introduction to Mayan culture before seeing some of the bigger local sites, then this is a great place to start! If you’re keen to learn more about the rich Mayan history of Cancun, check out our blog post: Why are the mayans an awesome civilization?

Museo Subacuático de Arte

Our next museum certainly is a little different – you’ll be heading to new depths of entertainment under the Caribbean Sea! The Cancun Underwater Museum.

Opened in 2010, it consists of over 500 sculptures positioned underwater, providing an alternative diving attraction to endangered coral reefs. Various artists contributed to the installation, with the largest installation ‘The Silent Evolution’ by British Artist Jason deCaires Taylor. The sculptures depict an almost ghostly underwater village, complete with people, cars, architectural structures, and even a man watching TV!

Don’t worry if you’re not a certified diver however; you can do a short introductory course followed by an instructor-led dive. Its is definitly one of our favorite must see museums in Cancun!

Museo de Cera de Cancún

Next up is the Cancun Wax Museum, bringing some celebrity status to your holiday!

These wax models have been expertly crafted to look like your favorite public figures; in a single visit, you can spin webs with Spiderman or use the force against Darth Vader. If you fancy posing with The Beatles, or doing your best Bond impression with Daniel Craig, the Cancun Wax Museum is an A-list activity for the whole family, and the perfect spot for a vacation selfie!

Great news if you’re staying at Krystal Cancun - its location on La Isla is just a short ten-minute taxi ride away.

Museo Sensorial del Tequila

Our final recommendation on the best museums in Cancun, offers a flavor that Mexico is renowned for – Tequila!

Centrally located within the Kukulkan Plaza, Cancun’s Tequila Museum is half museum, half shop, but this only means more tastings of Mexico’s favorite alcoholic beverage.

Tasting sessions mean that you can try from a range of 700 different Mexican brands, and offers an ideal opportunity to pick your favorite bottle to take home as a prized souvenir from your time in Cancun!

Cancun is a wonderful place, and if you’re looking for some cultural activities away from your sun lounger, these museum recommendations make for some fantastic afternoons. For more travel tips and recommendations in and around Cancun, check out our travel blog!
